A Deeper Dive into Stock Market and Financial Tech Trading – Is It Gambling?
The appeal of high-risk, speculative investments is real for many people. The distinction between investing and gambling can be subtle and subjective. Whether you view financial trading from an investing lens or speculating as gambling, the risk of gambling-related harms among financial traders appears to be amplified by new financial technologies, which have increased access to riskier financial assets and have encouraged riskier trading behaviors.
This session will explore the rising overlap between stock trading, cryptocurrency markets, and online sports betting in the digital age. As these platforms evolve and gain popularity, they increasingly share common traits-accessibility, fastpaced decision-making, and the potential for addictive behavior. Experts will delve into the psychological triggers that drive engagement in these spaces, the challenges of regulating and treating gambling behaviors across these platforms, and the impact of technology on investors and bettor psychology. Attendees will gain insights into how these markets may feed into each other, the risks involved, and the need for comprehensive strategies in both prevention and treatment for those at risk of harm.
